LATTICE WIRELESS ACCESS CONTROL SYSTEM (FIRST IN THE WORLD)
Paradigm Shift in Access Control System Design

Introduction
Lattice Wireless Access Control System (LWACS) is the first of the next generation of Access Control Systems. LWACS is the first Access Control System in the world to implements wireless mesh networking base on the IEEE 802.15.4 standards.
Lattice Wireless Access Controller (More Info) USB Wireless Interface WPCI

Typical System Overview
Each LWACS functions as a node in the network. The Server is connected to the USB Wireless Interface. When the server communicates to any controller, the network automatically route the data packet through the shortest number of nodes until it reaches its intended target. Reply from the controller is automatically routed to server via the shortest number of nodes.

If there are any controller failure on the network, data is routed via alternate route. The more controllers are available the more reliable the network connection.

Multiple Floors connection with floors without Controllers
For some of the building sites where there are floors without controllers, the wPCI can be used as a bridge to groups of controllers (eg. 2nd floor). The number of bridge node can be added indefinitely.

Lattice Wireless Specifications
  • IEEE 802.15.4 Low Power
  • Radio StandardsRadio Frequency 2.45Ghz
  • No license requirement
  • Co exist with WiFi Systems
  • Each Controller is a node for another controller
  • Automatic packet routing
  • Multiple path routing to increase reliability
  • AES-128 bits encryption with automatic key rotation
  • Line of Sight Distance: 400meters from controller to controller
  • Indoor Distance: 30 to 50 meters from controller to controller

Advantages of Lattice Wireless Control System
  • No communication wiring is required. Only Power supply wiring.
  • Reduces the implementation cost:
-Saving in wiring 40% of costs
    -Saving in implementation time 20%
-Saving in total project management 5%
-Saving in trouble shooting (maintenance) 30%
  • Do not need to know the wiring distance when implementing a new project. No site survey necessary.
  • Short implementation time. A 5 door site can be implemented within 1 day.
  • Commissioning is fast and easy without trouble shooting the wiring.System is truly scalable.
  • For additional door or time attendance terminal, simply plug in and turn on.For Server relocation, simply move server to new location within range of the Lattice Network.
  • If not within network range, just add additional node (wPCI)
  • In the long term, there is a huge saving in maintenance. If a controller is not working, simply change to a new controller. There is no messy wiring to maintain
  • Reduce Lightning Damages. As there are no communication wiring, lightning surges are significantly reduced.

What if the Wireless Communication Fails?
  • There will be times on rare occasion, when there are strong interference on the wireless radio spectrum
  • The Lattice Wireless Access Control will continue to work without any degradation as the database is kept in the controller. Only the transactions will be delayed until the wireless recovers. Its robust protocol will ensure that all the transactions are downloaded accurately.
  • If updates of cards are required when the communication fails, the software will create a background task which will wait for the wireless to recover and then install the cards. Once successful, the action will be reported to the user

Response time
  • The Server can poll up to 5 controllers per second. For 250 controllers, it takes up to 50 seconds to poll every controller.
  • The controllers have a broadcast mode which can send the transactions and alarms to the Server instantly without polling. The delay is less that 1 second. The Server will still poll the controller to make sure that it is still connected.

Security
  • The wireless uses AES-128 bits encryption. (see Wikipedia for more information)
  • A range of auto generated rotating Encryption Keys are used by the lattice controller.
  • Beside encryption, all data packet have sequence number and the system will detect a wrong sequence number.
  • Controller and wPCI have unique customer code which prevents access to other network controllers.
  • The Wireless is NOT WiFi, which makes it harder to hack

Paradigm Shift in System Design
  • The IEEE 802.15.4 was only rectified in 2006. Before then there are no similar standard.
  • Moore’s Law states that the computing power doubles every 18 months. Only recently the microprocessors have become powerful enough to support such system.
  • In the near future, every building related system will be based on this design.
